Stanford University and the Department of Behavioral Sciences are seeking a Software Engineer to develop and maintain scalable, production-grade frontend and backend systems supporting autism research in AI. The role involves collaborating with the PI and staff to execute programming tasks including analysis, design, development, implementation, and maintenance of computer programs.

The collaboration between Stanfords Department of Psychiatry and the School of Engineerings Computer Sciences group has focused on modules for verbal individuals on the autism spectrum, aiming to demonstrate AI module effectiveness and generalization to human conversation through ongoing research and clinical trials.

Duties Include
  • Design and develop solutions for complex systems independently.
  • Engage with users to gather information and develop intra-system tradeoffs; interact with diverse clients and vendors.
  • Document system builds and application configurations; update documentation as needed.
  • Perform technical analysis, design, development, conversion, and implementation.
  • Lead projects of moderate complexity as needed.
  • Serve as a technical resource for applications.
  • Evaluate and integrate new features and technologies into the environment.
  • Follow team software development methodologies.
  • Mentor junior developers.
Desired Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience (or 12 years with a Masters degree) in developing scalable systems.
  • Strong skills in Python and React, with experience in system architecture involving LLMs.
  • Expertise in prompt-engineering and fine-tuning LLMs.
  • Experience in user research, UX design, and human-computer interaction principles.
  • Proficiency in translating Figma designs into accessible front-end implementations.
  • Excellent cross-functional communication skills.
  • Deep experience in Agile development, sprint planning, and GitHub.
  • Knowledge of testing strategies for mission-critical applications.
  • Ability to mentor developers and volunteers.
Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
